Review of The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) by Peter L — 01 Mar 2010
One of the deeper, more involved spiritual films I have seen. An exploration of man's capacity for love, man's sense of duty, and above all man's perception of the divine. Willem Dafoe plays Christ with humility, and a raw quality that really grounded a figure who could easily become cartoonish.
Harvey Keitel has some beautiful moments as well, including a monologue towards the end that is simply heart-breaking. This film was a deeply personal investigation of spirituality. Scorsese poured his soul out for us, and I was touched.
