Review of The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) by Jayden ; — 07 Jul 2008
Early Christians debated amongst themselves about the balance of mortality and divinity within Jesus the man. This movie intelligently explores what it might have been like for Jesus to face his doubts and fears.
Goes against the orthodox story as told by the New Testament, but given the gospels that were left out of that document's creation, maybe that's not a bad thing since it creates a space to think and contemplate about the divinity of Jesus.
Despite being blasted as blasphemous movie, I found this actually deeply moving and contemplative, reverential piece of film making. It certainly has stayed in my mind for over twenty years. Update: Just watched this again, and my opinion still holds - I know there's a lot in the movie to shock those who hold on to a certain fundamental reading of Jesus, but I found the film to still be a sincere examination of the human side of Jesus and ultimately the movie reinforces the notion that truly he was the Son of God.
See, something for everyone!
