Review of The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) by Arjane X — 09 Feb 2009

Nikos kazantsakis put the balls back on Jesus. I like this film so much more than that-other-film-which-must-not be named because it's aim is not just to evoke a certain emotion, it challenges logic and explores majestically what's considered taboo.

Yeah sure we've been taught J died on the cross that he gave up his life period. What makes this film unique from all the other J-movies is the wideness of it's scope. It wasn't just one of those tunnel-vision offerings which had an hour flogging.

No. this one vividly explains to us ingrates what He had to give up. We were taught His life was all preaching and blitz-winemaking and we believed that because it made His sacrifice easier to swallow.

Show of hands, how many stayed glued until the credits of that-other-film? Exactly, sadistic pricks. Well I for one am never able to get through the first 15 minutes before ejecting the disc- not that it matters here.

But when you are introduced to the idea that He was just one of us; He HAD a life outside of demon-ass kicking; that makes you really start thinking. There can never be a more aptly named film for me than this.

It's about actually finishing on the road less traveled. Keeping on, raging on and not just hanging on. No matter how radical my chosen path seems top most people I know I'd always give in to the last temptation of Christ; the lure of a normal life at the end of it all.

Good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance. Most films have happy endings but I don't want placebo, thank you very much.
