Review of The Last Station (2009) by Jk F — 21 Feb 2010
I enjoyed this film, I really did. But a dose of clarity would have helped quite a lot. Whereas quite a few movies can deftly juggle their themes and individual story threads, this particular movie seemed to get a tad lost between the stories of various individuals and the bigger ideas it was kicking around.
Excellent, very committed performances helped (Helen Mirren in particular deserved top-billing as well as a far greater number of accolades than she's got this year) as did a script that seemed to have a pretty good idea of what it was about.
What the film struggled with was the awkward mesh between the hysteria pervading the central couple's marriage, the younger couple's fumbling liaison and the political ideas being bandied around.
All the ideas were undoubtedly present and correct, but they seemed to get lost in the direction somewhere.
