Review of The Last Station (2009) by Nikka A — 27 Feb 2010
I have to admit I went into this with a heavy heart and some trepidation. Is this going to be a bit slow and 'BBC drama'-ish? Well, I'm glad to say after watching this and the 2 other Oscar-nom films this week, this is the one that is the most engaging and dramatically rewarding for me.
Performances are good all round while Plummer and Mirren show how effortlessly it is done and deserving of their noms. Personally, it helps that I dont know much about the history and life of Tolstoy so I was always curious to find out more as the story unfolds - so I was hooked purely because of this.
Camp and overacted? Maybe, but it was pure joy and so much fun to watch nevertheless - and you cant really ask for much more these days - unless you are a Spielberg or a Scorcese or... a Peter Jackson?
