Helen Mirren is like a Chekhovian rock star. It is amusing, moving and heartbreaking to watch she and Christopher Plummer play against one another.
I have read that watching Mirren and Giamatti "brawl" is hardly a fair fight, but I have to disagree and say that I think Mirren comes off a terrific stage actress and Giamatti as a very naturalistic film actor. While our eyes will tend towards the larger, more visible performance, Giamatti's work in this is simple and strong.
