Review of The Last Station (2009) by Thomas W — 27 Jun 2010
Really didn't care for this film. Mind you, I had a pretty good idea in advance it wouldn't be up my alley, but I decided to give it a look for some of the Oscar-nominated acting performances. And to be honest, I was pretty underwhelmed. If those were supposed to be Russian accents, something has gone very wrong with modern cinema.
At first the film seems like it's going to be a period piece with jokes and comedic undertones built in, but then it suddenly takes a serious turn and you find yourself unsure as to how to react. The plot was uninteresting and, well, done, and the characters weren't appealing. I really can't find many positives to add - the romance was stupid and music was off. I guess you could argue that the backdrop was okay.
Regardless, Hollywood churns out a number of these kinds of films each year, and The Last Station isn't anything to get excited about. Unless your a Tolstoy fanboy/fangirl, don't bother.
