Review of The Last Station (2009) by Leighton T — 05 Jul 2010
A slice of life account of the last days of Leo Tolstoy's life as his followers and his wife fight over the rights to his writings. The actors shine here with Helen Mirren first and foremost giving a bravura performance of passion and unrestrained magnetism.
The irony is that Plummer plays Tolstoy with such subtlety and restraint, but he gives glimpses into the deep well inside. McAvoy, again is terrific and his character is actually the centerpiece of the film, and Giamatti seems to relish in this "villian-ish" type role.
It is beautifully lensed, the music fits well and Hoffman's simple vision lets the actors do their thing without overpowering the film.
