There's good acting here, and good stories, but unfortunately putting the stories of Tolstoy and his secretary together result in a lack of focus that hurts the film later. Mirren is indeed a goddess, Giamatti is clearly having fun, and McAvoy's got chops (which I already knew from Young Victoria).
