Review of The Last Starfighter (1984) by Thomas K — 06 Jul 2008
Probably not the best sci-fi movie in the world and probably not the best movie in the world. However, it did give young moviegoers another thing to imagine and dream about, and that says something about it. It had, however small or large, a mythos to it.
The storyline is standard fare for SF, but there's just something about it that made it rise above what it probably properly should have been. It might be that I grew up with it, that it's a part of my little geeky past, but it's just got something about it.
The CG are extremely good for their time. This film's and Star Trek 2's Genesis Device CG are commonly cited as the beginnings of Hollywood's acceptance of CG.
The show also sports some generally decent acting, lines, and characters. The villain commander (not the emperor) was a complete badass. Proof? "What do we do now commander?" His answer is the very definition of badass, and he was badass before that as well.
Another plus point for the show is that the ending doesn't cop out as some shows of this type tend to.
All in all, it's a fun movie, especially for those of is that grew up hoping that maybe, just maybe, the game we were playing was a testing simulator looking for heroes.
