Review of The Last Starfighter (1984) by Kestutis K — 08 Feb 2011
While the plot is a standard issue tale of a hero's journey from nobody to savior, The Last Starfighter has a lot of charm going for it. The cast, led by Lance Guest & Robert Preston, are extremely likable, the costumes are well made and even the computer effects have a quaint honesty to them when compared to modern spectacles. The score by Craig Safan is suitably epic for space adventures.
Simple it may be, but the film does hit the right nerve for anyone with a talent yearning for a lucky break to get out and have some adventure. Ultimately, that's not a bad thing at all.
