Review of The Last Samurai (2003) by David G — 19 May 2012
Truly one of the most inspiring films I've seen. The directing places such an emphasis on narrative and character that the film has a dynamic that is very rare. The characters are complex and portrayed brilliantly by all cast members.
Tom Cruise leads the film brilliantly, creating Nathan Algren as a complex, regrettful, truthful man who can use discernment and empathy to justify his actions. Ken Watanbe delivers one of the greatest suppporting roles of his career.
His character is also calm, deep in thought and a mighty leader that friggin kicks ass!! The soundtrack is unforgettable and undoubtably the greatest score ever written. Hans Zimmer's themes cause the heart to move perfectly in tune with the visuals - especially in the fight scenes and battle finale.
Unforgettable film that shows the true nature of the human soul and society.
