Review of The Last Picture Show (1971) by Brian B — 21 Jan 2008
By far the most awkward and unrewarding movie I've ever had the misfortune to watch. Every character is horny and gross. Hey, it's on the AFI top 100, so it must be good, right? It's one of those guaranteed-to-be-lame "coming of age" tales, only without the irony of Napoleon Dynamite or the symbolism of American Beauty.
Basically a shallow, wretched piece of trash, whose theme seems to be that small towns suck. Well, the result is a film that sucks because it sends the message in the most boring and straightforward way possible.
The scene near the end where the old guys don't care about the kid who got run over was totally ridiculous, unrealistic to the point of being obviously contrived. Anyway, watch at your own risk...
