Review of The Last Picture Show (1971) by Mikko D — 07 Dec 2009
I was about to give still a half stars more but maybe I'll save it for the next time. I've been wanting to see this film for over five years and it was as great as I expected. Bogdanovich is laughing to small town people and their issues and I see big ironic themes through the film though they're not so obvious at all.
I also like the B&W photography and the pictures in many dramatic scenes. Really interesting, nostalgic tragedy which shows the more rougher side of the 50's. This is not some James Dean worship movie.
Though Johnson and Leachman got the academy awards I more prefer (beautiful as hell) Cybil Shepherd in a small town bitch role.
