Review of The Last Picture Show (1971) by Ian H — 26 Mar 2010
The Last Picture Show is an absolute masterpiece. I really didn't expect much out of it at first, but by the time it was over, I was practically a different person. I never would have thought that a movie about a group of teens learning about the real world could be so great.
The actors each play their respective roles perfectly. As it turns out, young Jeff Bridges is just as good as modern Jeff Bridges. The plot is excellent and balances the separate stories of these characters perfectly.
The use of black and white perfectly captures the narrative and, really, the whole overall concept of the movie of being the last of the great pictures. This may only be ranked in the upper ninties of AFI's top 100 movies, but it is more than deserving of that place in the pantheon of cinema.
