Review of The Last of the Mohicans (1992) by Sandy M — 28 Oct 2009
Michael Mann has made many fine films, but this might be his best effort to date. A fantastically crafted tale, it is a movie that works on all levels and it doesn't disappoint. Despite its romantic premise, it certainly isn't just a love story - in fact the French/Indian war is the backdrop of the tale and is the main focus of the narrative. This conflict, and the conflict between the tribes who become involved in the war is what drives the movie to both a thrilling and unexpected finale.
The cast are all excellent too - Daniel Day Lewis once again proving he is perhaps the greatest actor of his generation. Madeleine Stowe excels as well in her first high profile role, as does Wes Studi who brings menace and authenticity to the role of Magua. Overall this is a movie that deserved much more in terms of reward than it actually received, and now easily falls into the all time classic category for its genre. Highly recommended, it is a must in any serious DVD collection. 5/5.
