Review of The Last Legion (2007) by Mei Yen C — 06 Jun 2008
In spite of a prestigious cast and a fantastic plot (fantastic in the sense that it is loosely based on History), The Last Legion fails to deliver what it promises as the actors give the impression of having been left to follow a script below their talent.
Since Mel Gibson's 1995 Braveheart and Ridley Scott's 2000 Gladiator, the Epic genre came back in fashion. This trend was confirmed by the success of Peter Jackson's adaptation of J. R. R.
Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Yet, as Wolfgang Petersen's 2004 Troy lamentably demonstrated, it takes more than a prestigious cast and an Oxbridge accent to hit a homerun: The Last Legion it a combination of poor storytelling, dull dialogs, cheap score and, dare I say: bad stunts.
