Review of The Last King of Scotland (2006) by Leigh Ann M — 12 Jul 2009
Very good acting performances in this movie. A real study in the dangers that go with associating yourself with a brutal dictator, even if it starts off innocently.
I found it hard to sympathize with James McAvoy's character, as his inability to keep his pants zipped consistently got him (and others) in serious trouble. But McAvoy is a good actor with a lot of potential, and I hope to see more of him in the future.
Forest Whitaker was so good in capturing the inevitable charisma that such leaders possess, even those who are at the core evil. You can see how the naive doctor would be drawn to him, and I liked how his true character is revealed to the audience at the same rate as it is to McAvoy's character.
This movie possesses one of the more brutal scenes I've ever seen, every bit as violent and disgusting as anything in a Tarantino movie.
Good job on this movie!
