Review of The Last King of Scotland (2006) by Simon W — 26 Sep 2009
Forrest Whitaker was amazing in this and he deserved his Oscar, but it should have been for best supporting actor. This was McAvoy's show and he should have gotten his nod - at least a nomination.
Two fascinating but disspicable central characters. Whitaker casts a genuinly scary shadow as the irrationality of his Idi Amin begins to shine through, and McAvoy is great as the young impressionable doctor, seeing only the world he wants to see and thus choosing not to see the damage that his choices cause to the lives of those around him.
The second hour is unbearably tense and builds to one of the most powerfull pay offs that I have seen in the longest time.
