Review of The Last King of Scotland (2006) by Jan G — 20 Mar 2010
While the story of Idi Amin's reign of terror in Uganda, in which 300,000 people were murdered, is worthy subject of a film, this movie was poorly done, not dealing with atrocities against the people (no genocide or murdering of political dissidents are shown).
The movie instead follows a fictional immoral Scottish doctor (white I assume in order to maintain interest with the audience) as he goes around sleeping with married women and living a Las Vegas lifestyle, with most scenes completely irrelevant to the conflict that occurred.
The movie tries to make out Idi Amin as a brash, unpredictable character, and while they do succeed in that, it is poorly done. Considering that the Scottish doctor is fictional, I was disappointed that he was not murdered at the end for sleeping with the Idi Amin's wife.
