Review of The Last King of Scotland (2006) by Eric V — 11 Apr 2012
Truly a great movie. "The Last King of Scotland" captures the madness and violence of the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. The story is based on true events and tells the story of a young Scottish medical student, Nicholas Garrigan (James MacAvoy) who goes to Uganda on a medical mission.
After acting swiftly in a crisis, Amin establishes Garrigan as his own personal physician. Amin is friendly to the young student, but soon Garrigan becomes frighteningly aware of the dictator's brutality and his own complicity, and soon realizes that he must leave if he is to survive.
Truly a wonderful movie, Forest Whitaker plays Amin in a well-deserved Oscar winning performance and captures a charming dictator's spiral into utter madness and megalomania. If someone created a list of the movies that you should see at least once before you die, "The Last King of Scotland" should definitely be on that list.
