Review of The Last House on the Left (2009) by Danny S — 09 Nov 2010
Movies that go out of their way to try and shock me aren't impressive. Far too often, such films focus on showing the gruesome details and forget all about characterization, plot, and story telling. This movie falls squarely in that category.
"The Last House on the Left" is based on the 1972 slasher film of the same name. A group of criminals happen across a pair of teenage girls who they attack and brutally murder and rape. Stuck in the forest due to a massive thunderstorm, they are forced to seek refuge in a nearby house ... not knowing that it is the home of one of the girls they attacked. Her parents help the strangers and offer them a place to stay for the night, completely unaware of what they have done to their daughter.
The first thirty minutes of the film are difficult to get through. I am not squeamish by any stretch of the imagination, but there is a point where you just have to stop and say "Okay, enough". The first thirty minutes, by the way, is the murder and rape scene. They show you ever single moment of it and the scene takes up almost a third of the entire film.
After that, it would have taken a cinematic masterpiece to make this a good movie. It wasn't, so it isn't.
The rest of the film is about the parents brutally attacking each bad guy and vice versa. It is all pretty predictable and nothing compelling or interesting happens the rest of the way.
