Review of The Last House on the Left (2009) by Justin L — 03 Sep 2013
Surprisingly well done, brutal although annoyingly optimistic remake. It follows the basic premise of the original (as well as that films source material: Bergman's The Virgin Spring) but is nowhere near as exploitative.
The performances are all solid and the brutality is sold very well but never borders on the lingering voyeuristic qualities of the 'torture porn' films. It all feels very much grounded in reality. Until the end any way. The last couple minutes are so over the top, out of character and just flat out ludicrous that it negates much of what the viewer(s) has already seen. This, along with one other major plot change, make the film far more optimistic than the original and needlessly so.
