Review of The Last House on the Left (2009) by Marc A — 13 Jan 2011
Much better than I anticipated. Surpasses the original not in shock value, but definitely in craftsmanship. This remake thankfully leaves out the dopey policemen comedy subplot of the original, and goes straight for the jugular with its unabashed brutality, all the while looking crisp with some excellent performances.
Garret Dillahunt gives a breakthrough performance as Krug, on par with his work in DEADWOOD as Francis Wolcott, George Hearst's prostitute murdering surveyor. Tony Goldwyn and Monica Potter are stellar as the parents, and Sara Paxton brings a sexiness and soft sense of realism to the main damsel in distress.
This film is definitely not for everyone...it features some incredibly brutal scenes, but as it goes in these films, payback is a bitch.
