Review of The Last House on the Left (1972) by Gordon/The Mad Artist — 14 Mar 2009
Wes Craven's exploitation flick version of THE VIRGIN SPRING. All the depravity is emphasized with none of the Bergman grace notes, and even though I admittedly rooted for the family's revenge, it was more out of primal reflex than a filmmaker's persuasive skill.
It can be riveting (if you are able to stick with the film), but riveting like a grisly traffic accident. And let's face it, this modern version of the story is a major influence on the current violence porn movement (blecch!).
