Review of The Last Exorcism (2010) by Amy G — 03 Aug 2012
Mockumentaries seem to be gaining a lot of steam in the past few years, and this film is one of the reasons. The Last Exorcism manages to be an above average horror film with plenty of thrilling and downright freaky moments.
It's a unique take on the genre, allowing it to re-hash an old plot made famous by The Exorcist without being another carbon copy. The entire film is carried by lead actor Patrick Fabian, who plays a convincing Rev.
Cotton Marcus. Virtually the entire story focuses on him and his struggles with faith as he encounters an all too real possession of a teenage girl. The shaky, amateurish camera angles and lack of good lighting contribute immensely, and all the right stuff is shown (or not shown) in order to build true suspense.
However, the film eventually goes for the ultimate cop-out ending that is somewhat shocking, but just doesn't match the realism and subtlety that makes the rest of the film work.
