Review of The Last Exorcism (2010) by Kameron M — 24 Jan 2013
Going into it I hadn't read much about it, nor have I seen anything other than the trailer, so automatically I set my expectations low to the "this is going to be a typical bad horror film you can just laugh about with your friends" level.
I was definitely surprised by how involved I was after about 20 minutes. It's pretty much the story of a preacher/exorcist who while losing his faith decides to take a documentary crew along to his last exorcism to expose the process for what it really is. Well he picked the wrong family for his final act.
The story was utterly suspense, although not as terrifying as I would have hoped. It kept me wanting to know what was happening. The main actors (the preacher and the girl) had excellent performances and the fake-documentary feel was a great choice and worked well for the film. With the film's great plot, characters, pacing, and building suspense, I would have to say the only negative was the lack of terror I excepting to see from a film of the horror genre. Though the last 30 minutes did deliver on the terror, so all was not lost. I highly recommend this film if you like horror and can appreciate a film with lite gore, but a suspense heavy plot.
Score: B+.
