Review of The Last Emperor (1987) by Adam S — 02 Feb 2008
Bertolucci's film is very long, but pretty good. The best part about it is the performance by the young man that plays the Emperor in his twenties, naturally this was the only thing the film was not nominated for at the oscars.
Storraro's photography is stunning, but ultimately the film is overlong (at least in the four hour version) and not tremendously compelling. But it does do a good job of smacking down the insanity of the cultural revolution.
Communist repression sucks, duh.
