Review of The Last Emperor (1987) by Efrén O — 27 Mar 2008
A visually stunning epic that chronicles the rise and fall of China's last emperor. From his very privileged upbringing to his time in prison and his final days we see Pu Yi change. Over the course of some fifty years we see Pu Yi gain, lose, regain and lose yet again his power and position at the hands of others.
Everywhere he goes doors are shut to him and he is always a prisoner. Tragedy extends to all aspects of his life and we are witness to it all. The entire cast does a wonderful job in bringing this story to life again.
Peter O'Toole is a stand out to me for more reasons than the fact that he's the only character who isn't Chinese. The thing that stands out the most though is the beauty of the film from the locations to the costumes.
The utmost attention is payed to detail and it all comes together to make a truly magnificent film. It's a moving experience from beginning to end.
