Review of The Last Emperor (1987) by Calvin C — 28 Aug 2010
One of three films to ever sweep the Academy Awards including Best Picture, this is a lavish, and beautiful Best Picture about the last emperor of China. The first half is amazing, pulling us into a world that is primarily hidden from the public eye. The second half kind of stumbles when we see Pu Yi as an adult. It is a little less interesting and I didn't feel as involved as I did earlier in the film. Nonetheless, this is a very good historical picture that shows how easily one person can be the most powerful person in the world one minute and live their last days as a common gardner the next.
Grade: A-.
