Review of The Last Emperor (1987) by Jake P — 07 Feb 2012
"The Last Emperor" 10 Scale Rating: 6.5 (Solid Movie) ...
When a movie wins nine Academy Awards it is a must see for me. While "The Last Emperor" didn't turn out to be the epic I had hoped for, it was a pretty good movie.
As the title indicates, the film is about the last emperor of China. It follows his life from the time he is anointed emperor as a child up until he leads a quiet life of obscurity as an older man. The main focus of the movie is the emperor and his inability to adapt to a life that is not privileged.
The material was interesting, but the length of the movie brings it down. Weighing in at three hours and forty-five minutes, the film bogs down at times. It can't help but bog down at that length, but I think it would have been a better movie had a good forty-five minutes been left out. I probably would have given it another star in that case.
