Review of The Last Emperor (1987) by Hans J. E — 23 Mar 2010
It feels rushed, like a Cliff's Notes version of early 20th century Chinese history. The acting is a little stiff, and except for Chen and O'Toole, no one stands out. Nonetheless, one cannot deny the visual splendor, with incredible attention to detail, spectacular pageantry, and Storaro's gorgeous cinematography.
It's a real feast for the eyes. And for a movie of this length, better that it feels rushed than feeling sluggish. There are plenty enough interesting moments to make it worthwhile.
