Review of The Last Duel (2021) by Candlejack84 — 01 Dec 2021
First thing I've got to get off my chest. Why are some people calling this movie "timely"? What a ridiculous statement. Are they genuinely trying to suggest that there are any parallels to how women are treated today?? Absurd is too weak a word.
Anyway that being said I was impressed with this film.No doubt if this film had been made a few years peviously then more people could have appreciated for what it is and when it was set rather than just through the current lens of feminist wokery. Yes, misogyny is obviously a theme but it's set in the late 14th century ffs! No doubt current social trends had some influence on this film but it is essentially a reworking of a Japanese film from 1950 but set ot a real historical event. Another theme of the movie is perspective and how the same events are always viewed differently through different eyes and the film plays with this idea very well. Action sequences are very few and far in between but what there are are we'll shot. Good actors all round but the standout is probably Jodie Comer. Not one for young kids, this isn't Prince Of Thieves or anything like that. Just go and enjoy for what it is, a story set in the late 1300s in France.
