Review of The Last Detail (1973) by Eric M — 01 Jan 2009
Hal Ashby's bittersweet dark comedy about two sailors showing a young prisoner the time of his life before sending him to the brig is one of my favorite movies of all time and one of the forgotten treasures of '70s cinema.
Nicholson's performance is one of his best, and co-stars Otis Young and Randy Quaid (in perhaps his finest role) are equally impressive. Be warned, though: Robert Towne's creatively raunchy dialogue will definitely let you know where the phrase "swear like a sailor" came from.
