Review of The Ladykillers (2004) by Ed F — 13 Jun 2010
Perhaps the Coen's worst film yet, swapping their usual edgy cynicism for outright slapstick, which was both distracting and unfunny. I didn't laugh once during the film and this is because I think the Coens tried to cram in as many crime caper connotations and references to the original as possible, which results in the film feeling muddled and forced.
That said, the performances are good, Hanks is as watchable as ever and Roger Deakins' cinematography is used to perfection, lending the film a dark and foreboading atmosphere which is unfortunately lost within the dreary screenplay.
