Review of The Ladykillers (2004) by Wes M — 22 May 2012
"You brought your bitch to the Waffle Hut?" It's hard to believe that the Coens can make a movie that's not amazing. It's even harder to believe that they can do it twice in a row.
Right after they made Intolerable Cruelty, they remade this. The premise is great, and it sets the movie up for some hilarious situations, but idk, the humor style was drastically different than their other outings.
The stupid characters are still here, and these are quite possibly some of the dumbest characters they've ever had. And of course the money plot is still used, but the jokes came off as corny, extremely low-brow, and even reused, which is extremely unlike the Coens.
I mean, I had to sit through Marlon Wayans attempting to act like a stereotypical black. Dude, you ARE black, you don't have to pretend! As far as he's concerned, the only thing I could stand him in was Requiem, which he was shockingly good in.
And there's poop jokes, lots of them. I like toilet humor as much as the next guy, but it doesn't belong in a Coen film. Leave that to the pros, a.k.a. the Farrelly Brothers. (Dumb & Dumber 2 next year! Woot woot).
I liked Tom Hanks, but I dunno if I've ever not liked him haha. I felt like this, and Intolerable Cruelty, were two incredibly average movies, and I never thought I'd say this, but I was disappointed in the Coens.
Oh well, nobody's perfect, and I've still got a few more of there older ones to check out. I've only heard good things from here on out. Can't wait. Also, the original Ladykillers might be worth a watch, cuz it's got Alec Guiness and Peter Sellers.
Noted.
