Review of The Ladykillers (2004) by Eric H — 20 Jan 2014
The Coen Brothers put their own stamp on the 1955 classic about crooks posing as musicians, using an unsuspecting old widow's home as a base to commit a robbery. The setting, characters, and plot details have been changed enough that it feels like more than a remake.
The expository scenes are not funny, but there are plenty of chuckles later, particularly the exchanges between old white liberal Simmons and black punk Wayans. Hanks plays the leader of the gang in the same vein as Alec Guinness in the original.
However, the character of the widow is changed considerably, not necessarily for the better. Ultimately, it's not as good as the original but a worthwhile diversion.
