Review of The Ladykillers (2004) by Hunter M — 02 Jul 2008
"The Ladykillers" is not only the Coens' worst film, it's also Tom Hanks' worst film, J. K. Simmons' worst film, Marlon Wayans' worst film. . . you get the idea. There are funny scenes here and there, and Roger Deakins' cinematography is of course luscious and beautiful, but the movie itself is just too weird, crass and unfunny to come off as anything other than terrible.
And shame on Joel and Ethan for attempting to interject their infamous brand of irony into this unworthy tale; they fill it to the brim with hateful characters involving themselves in unfunny scenarios and then expect us to care if they live or die.
By the anti-climactic climax, I just didn't care at all.
