Review of The Lady Vanishes (1938) by Louis D — 18 Nov 2007
With The Lady Vanishes, Alfred Hitchcock has constructed an almost gay romp of a spy thriller. The film opens with a slew of characters being put into comedic situations, then transitions into a giddy mystery consisting of two young sleuths hastily falling for the other, then transitions again into a tense getaway involving poisoned drinks and shootouts.
The genius of it is the film never loses sight of its comedic tone despite its various shifts into more threatening genre devices.
