Review of The Lady Vanishes (1938) by Gavin M — 18 Sep 2008
Classic British thriller from Alfred Hitchcock, made shortly before the Master of Suspense upped sticks to Hollywood. Story of an elderly governess who disappears on a train in eastern Europe in a politically volatile climate (pre-WW2, remember), and the search for her by a young couple is a perfect setup for Hitch to work his suspenseful magic.
Lockwood and Redgrave are both great leads, but the show is stolen by Naunton Wayne and Basil Radford as Caldicott and Charters, two cricket-obsessed Englishmen trying to get back to England. Perfect entertainment.
