Review of The Lady Vanishes (1938) by Christopher C — 15 Dec 2012
Even though I am not of the Hitchcock generation, I am thrilled when younger people my age also enjoy classic cinema and it does take a certain level of maturity to appreciate and enjoy classic films. Glad to find this one on Netflix! Of course it is in black and white, the acting was good and this film ranks in the top 10 Hitchcock movies that every Hitchcock fan should watch or has seen.
Initially the film is a bit slow but once everyone boards the train it gets better. A young woman named Iris (Margaret Lockwood) is heading home to get married and boards a train with an older lady she met the day prior at the hotel she spent the night at.
During the train ride she becomes more acquainted with the older lady named Ms Froy (Dame May Whitty). Iris falls asleep and upon waking up discovers that Ms Froy has vanished from the train while it is still in motion.
Her desperate search for Ms Froy comes to a sudden stop when everyone else on the train denies ever seeing or speaking with the old woman. Is there a conspiracy going on? You will have to watch it but remember that not everything is what it seems and Alfred Hitchcock as the director did a wonderful job on this one.
I loved the ending!
