Review of The Lady Vanishes (1938) by Matthew C — 11 Feb 2014
Not one of Hitchcock's best but certainly an intriguing espionage thriller that a train surprisingly works well housing. Then again it's not a surprise because Hitchcock manages to turn everything you think you know on its head.
I enjoyed the performances and the story was baffling through most of the film but the ending isn't satisfying although the romance is and the subsequent reunion at the end, though predictable, brings joy.
A creepy cast of characters helps as we'll, many if them with juicy motives and flavorful covers. All and all a worthy effort for a director coming into his own and establishing his voice as master of suspense.
