Review of The Lady Vanishes (1938) by Bill C — 16 Aug 2018
Seventy-five years have done nothing to diminish the appeal of this smart, ground-breaking comic-spy thriller. Criterion's brilliant BRD edition only emphasizes how story, acting and direction can overcome stagecraft on a limited 1938 British budget.
Margaret Lockwood is as clever, in control and thoroughly modern as any actress on the screen today. Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne are infectiously funny - whether you get them or not ( the Hayes Code was in full bloom in the late thirties ). Emile Boreo's hotel manager presents us with a prototype for the amazing Roberto Benigni.
Wonderful stuff!
