Review of The Lady in the Van (2015) by Junelkean — 27 Jun 2017
The Lady in the Van is somewhat a true story of a homeless woman who lives in a van for fifteen years in the driveway of British playwright, Alan Bennett. With Maggie Smith playing the titular character, and Alex Jennings playing as Bennett, the two characters somewhat grow and touch the lives of each other despite of the trials and tribulations ahead of their way.
If you would expect this as the story about the lady in “The Lady in the Van”, you are incorrect. The film tries to become Bennett’s movie, and just makes Smith’s characters a sort of metaphor to his life. It is filled with certain moments that are being overemphasized, while some of the more necessary scenes are being slightly focused.
VERDICT: Miss Shepherd is tastefully performed by Smith, but The Lady in the Van fails to offer contemporary audience impact, instead bringing a boring and unfunny movie.
