Review of The Lady from Shanghai (1947) by Gregory G — 03 Dec 2007
Probably one of Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth's finest films.
An awesome film noir that really twists and turns. It took me a second watch to really get it, but I loved it the first time.
It's well acted, dark, creepy, visually stunning (as Welles' films tend to be), with a great plot, and extremely interesting characters. It also leads to one of the finest last scenes in film history.
Oh and I'm not silly for being confused: Harry Cohn, head of Columbia Studios at the time was so baffled by the first edit of the film he ordered Welles to re-edit it, culling off almost an hour of footage to the version we see now.
One can only hope that Columbia unearth the original edit, and release a directors cut.
