Review of The Lady from Shanghai (1947) by Late R — 14 Feb 2018
Beautifully shot with exquisite cinematography that makes the most of its locations, great camerawork and a terrific ending sequence, 'The Lady From Shanghai' is a riveting tale with a number of twists and turns.
If you don't follow closely, the story may seem confusing as it jumps around in a dizzying fashion from revelation to revelation, each with its own set of implications; but keep a close eye on things and you'll find that it mostly comes together quite nicely in the end, leaving you breathless but satisfied.
Utterly captivating performances from Hayworth and Welles, as well as typically ambitious directing from the latter, tops things off and keep you glued to the screen. It's a bit of a manic film in all the right ways.
