Review of The Lady from Shanghai (1947) by Matthew S — 20 Jul 2010
Orson Welles' questionable Irish accent is matched by his lack lustre performance in this rather unusually structured Film Noir. Infact almost every key character is unusual in this film, every one except for the stunning femme fatale played by Rita Hayworth.
The story does build well but seems to end abruptly and lacking in the impetus it implied. The title is also rather a misnoma as the Lady (Hayworth) talks more about other places than Shanghai. As with so many of Welles' "other" films, this seems not to translate quite as well from his mind to our screens.
