Review of The King's Speech (2010) by Miyuki S — 22 Jun 2014
Friends ? just being kind.
I've just seen "The King's Speech" and would like to give a comment about it. I normally don't watch those kinds of historical movies, but actually, I think it is a good one.
This movie is based on King George ?'s life just before WW2. The Duke of York?stammers while he talks. It is a big problem because he is the second son of King George ?, but he has given up being cured. However, his wife, Elizabeth, persuades him to see Lionel Logues who is an Australian speech and language therapist. Their relationship does not go very well at first, but they eventually become great friends.
I think the cast is great. I especially like Geoffrey Rush who plays Lionel Logue. I think his acting contributes a lot to make the movie very exciting. Also, Guy Pearce who played King Edward ? did a good job to express his foolishness and selfishness.
I liked the scene where The Duke of York finally accepts Lionel as a friend and calls him "my friend". Here, I could see how strong their bond is. I was really happy to see that Lionel's effort to be close to the king finally bears fruit.
From this movie, I learned that being a great friend does not always mean being kind. Sometimes, you have to be strict and say or do something harsh to your friends, in order to actually help them. It's not easy and you might be disliked by the one you tried to help. However, you have to be strong and believe that she/he will notice someday that you said/did something strict because you wanted to help him/her.
I think it may seem too difficult for children or teenagers, but adults will definitely like this movie. I recommend this movie to those who are having a social problem. I am sure this movie will remind you of real friends. This movie is really worth watching even though it seems like a sophisticated topic.
