Review of The Kingdom (2014) by Andrew S — 16 Sep 2009
Pretty well balanced film.. There's some political intrigue, some action, some commentary on the war on terror. It seems there's a constant push and pull, sort of on either side of the script..
Playing upon your bloodlust for revenge and your more delicate sensibilities about the projection of violence. Berg has done a great job here of putting his audience a little off balance. At one end of the spectrum, one could view this film as a simple revenge exploitation film with plenty of action; on the other, one could view it as a socio-political piece with a conscience.
Detail oriented and more well rounded viewers will probably find that it's a valiant effort at making a commercially viable American film that also seeks to inform.. And highlight that while vengeance is a valid motive on screen, out here beyond the camera lens it carries serious, long term human consequences.
