Review of The King of Comedy (1982) by Nick P — 27 Jun 2009
This is another Scorsese masterpiece, one that is vastly underrated. I enjoyed this movie a ton! Mostly because it was nice to see Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese collaborate on a dark comedy film, something they are not known for.
De Niro does a fantastic job of playing the delusional Rupert Popkin, who will do anything in his power to get a break on the stand up comedy scene. From rushing a corporate office, to kidnapping Jerry Lewis, De Niro's portyral of Popkin is out of control.
There are just some absolutely brilliant moments in this movie, especially when De Niro is having fantasies of success that intercut with reality. This movie is really unique and I recommend it to anyone who wants some good, unexpected and offbeat laughs.
The movie was made in 1983 and it does not feel dated at all. The movie also has some great themes and messages about being jaded by success. A Truly Unique Film. See it!
